ELECTRON RADIATION INDUCED VOID SWELLING AND GRAIN BOUNDARY SEGREGATION IN AN Fe-Cr-Mn AUSTENITIC ALLOY

The behavior of void swelling and segregation in Fe-15Cr-xMn alloys and an alloy con- taining small amount of W and V was investigated by electron-irradiation.The compositional analysis in the irradiated regions including grain boundaries was performed.The resultdts show that there are many common features of irradiuation tehavior in the Fe-Cr-Mn and Fe-Cr-Ni systems while there are some significant differences,In the Fe-Cr-Mn alloy sys- tems void swelling was rematrkably suppressed and at the same time the radiation-induced segregation was also retarded,furthermore,the segregation was strongly retarded in an Fe-15Cr-15Mn alloy containing small amount of W and V.The results also show that Ni re- placed by Mn does not in general confer immunity from either swelling or phase instabilities. The phase instability is due to the different diffusion behavior of Ni and Mn in reponse to the operation of the inverse-Kirkendall effecr.Fe segregates to the microstructural sinks in the Fe-Cr-Mn alloys.The segregation of Fe often leads to the formation of ferrite.This fact is beneficial to reducing the swelling rate and segregation on the grain boundaries.

PREFERRED ORIENTATION OF DEPOSITED TiC COATING ON STEEL BY CVD

Investigation was made of the deposited rate,surface morphology and crystal pre- ferred orientation of the dense TiC coating onto austenitic stainless steel in relation with CH_4/TiCl_4 mole ratio and temperature adopted in CVD processing. When the CH_4/TiCl_4 ratio is low or high,the preferred orientation may be(220)or(200),respec- tively,which is mainly dependent on the equilibrium concentration of active C in vapour phase.

R & D OF HYDROGEN ABSORBING ALLOYS IN JAPAN

The R & D of hydrogen absorbing alloys in Japan started in the early 1970s.Many alloys such as TiMm1.5 based alloys, Fe-Ti-O alloys (e.g. FeTi1.15 O0.024) andthe(mischmetal)Ni5 based alloys (e.g. MmNi4.5 Cr0.46 Mn0.04) were developed by the early 1980s. The application of these alloys to hydrogen storage, heat storage, heat pump, hydrogen purification and motor vehicles has been tried in many iaboratories,and the various techniques for using hydrogen absorbing alloys have been developed.The standarkization of evaluation methods for hydrogen absorbing alloys has been promoted by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), and four of them were established as Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS).Alloys for Ni-Metal Hydride batteries have been extensively investigated since 1987in Japun. Mm-Ni-Co-Al-Mn alloys (e.g. MmNi3.55 Co0.75Al0.9Mn0.4) have been devel-oped and commereialized since 1990. The amount of production of small-size Ni-MH batteries in 1995 was about three hundred milliion in number and about one hundred billion yen. The R & D for higher enerpy-density Ni-MH batteries is intensively in progress.MITI and STA (Science and Technology Agency) have promoted the R & D of hydro-gen absorbing alloys in Japan by carrying out the national projects such as Sunshine Program (MITI: 1974-1993) and Utilization of Wind Engeray (STA 1980-1985). The New Sunshine Program (MITI 1993-2020) have started in 1993. This program con-tains the application of hydrogen absorbing alloys to Economical- Enerpy- City System and to We-NET (International Clean Energy System of Technology Utilizing Hydro-gen: World Energy Network.

SUBSTRUCTURE ALTERATION OF STAINLESS STEEL DURING CONSTANT STRAIN FATIGUE

The alteration of substructure of an austenitic stainless steel has been investigated during con- stant strain fatigue.No plateau stage on the cyclic stress-strain curve was observed for the stainless steel in contrast with a monocrystalline pure copper specimen.This may relate to its low stacking fault energy.During strain fatigue under various amplitudes the substructure of dislocation in austenite alterates correspondingly.It revealed to associate with the appearance change of the cyclic stress-strain curve.

FLOTATION-SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF TRACES OF PHOSPHORUS IN IRON, NICKEL, COBALT, COPPER AND ZINC USING MOLYBDATE AND MALACHITE GREEN

A sensitive method for the determination of traces of P in Fe, Ni, Co, Cu and Zn is based on the formation of an ion-associate with molybdate and malachite green, whose absorbance is measured at 620 nm. The calibration curve is linear up to 0. 1 0-mu-g/ml; molar absorptivity is 2.7 x 10(5) l mol-1 cm-1. It was found that commonly coexisting elements did not interfere.
